Cleft Lip and Palate and Craniofacial Anomalies

A specialist of cleft lip and cleft palate (harelip)

Dr. Broula Jamal is additionally specialized in the treatment of craniofacial anomalies and the correction of cleft lip and cleft palate (harelip) using nasoalveolar molding and orthodontics. This treatment is available in the hospital setting only. We can, however, inform you about it at our clinic and would be happy to guide you in this process.

One in 700 children

One out of 700 babies is born with harelip and one in three couples finds out during an ultrasound.

Infants of Asian or Native American descent are most often affected by this birth defect.

Dr. Jamal sees between 15 and 25 children who are born with this malformation every year at the Montreal Children’s Hospital.

New hope

Parents who bring into the world a child with harelip now have new hope.

Dr. Jamal uses an innovative pre-chirurgical technique that contributes to the treatment of cleft lip and cleft palate.

This non-invasive intervention, called nasoalveolar molding (NAM), reprofiles the gums, lips, and nostrils before surgery, resulting in almost perfect features and fewer surgical interventions.

Dr. Jamal is one of the few to offer nasoalveolar molding treatment  in Quebec

This technique takes advantage of the malleability of immature cartilage to make the nose as symmetrical as possible and to raise collapsed nostrils.

It also helps to stretch the soft tissues like the lips, allowing the surgeon to close them without any tension, which reduces scarring.
